Video Editor

Edit your recordings in the browser: cut by reading the transcript, add music, titles, transitions and B-roll, and export to MP4. What you see in the editor is what you get in the file.

Get started in five steps

The basic path, from recording to finished video:

  1. Open Recordings and press Edit on the recording you want.
  2. Press Transcribe to get the transcript with the timing of every word.
  3. Select what you do not need in the transcript and press Delete. If you like, remove the long pauses in one go.
  4. Add music, titles, transitions or B-roll from the inspector on the right.
  5. Press Export and choose Download to my device or Save to my cloud.

Open the editor

The editor is included in the paid plans. In Recordings, press Edit on any recording. A recording is edited in one window or device at a time: if it is already open somewhere else, the editor tells you, and you can take it over with Retry once you close it there. The original recording is never changed: your changes are saved as a separate edit.

How it is laid out

On the left are the Transcript, AI Clips, Markers and History tabs. In the middle, the Viewer with the timecode, the playback controls and the level meter. On the right, the Inspector, with the options of whatever you have selected. At the bottom, the timeline with its tracks: CLIPS (AI clips), T1 (titles), V2 (B-roll), V1 (video), A1 (voice) and A2 (music). You can resize the panels; on narrow screens the inspector moves to the Tools tab.

Transcribe

Press Transcribe and the server transcribes the recording from your cloud, with the exact timing of every word. It works with recordings up to 4 hours long. You can edit without a transcript using the timeline; the transcript is needed to edit by text, remove pauses by text, create captions and search for AI clips.

Edit by reading the transcript

Click a word or drag to select several (Shift + click extends the selection) and press Delete to remove them. What you remove is struck through and the video skips it when playing, cutting on the exact frame. Find any phrase with Ctrl+F. The selection shows in the transcript and on the timeline at the same time.

Timeline

With the Select tool (V) you drag to pick a stretch and move the edges of each piece to adjust the cuts. The Blade (B) cuts where you click, and Ctrl+B cuts at the playhead. The Trim tool (T) slides a piece. Snapping (N) sticks edges to cuts, markers and words; hold Alt to move freely. Zoom with Ctrl + wheel, with + and - or by pinching with two fingers; Shift + Z shows everything. Add markers with M (with a color and a note in the Markers tab) and set in and out points with I and O. Show deleted shows or hides what you removed.

Play and review

Space plays or pauses. J, K and L play backwards, pause and play forwards; pressing again goes faster. The arrow keys move one frame, and with Shift one second. Ctrl+L loops the selection. Type a time into the timecode field to jump there. With Edited and Original you choose between the result of your edit and the whole recording.

Remove pauses and captions

In the inspector, Remove pauses finds the silences longer than the length you choose (by audio level or by the gaps between words), tells you how much time you save and removes them in one step you can undo. In Subtitles you download the captions of your edit as SRT or VTT, and choose whether the exported video has them burned in: Dynamic (highlighted word), Clean or No captions.

The voice (track A1)

In Voice track you set the volume of the whole voice, mute it or listen to it alone (for review only, it does not change the export). Normalize loudness brings the voice to the usual level of YouTube, Spotify and social networks (-14 LUFS) without clipping. On track A1 you can raise or lower the volume of each piece by dragging its line, and add fades in and out with the handles at its corners. When there is music or normalization, peak control keeps anything from distorting.

Music (track A2)

Press Add music and pick a song from your library (the same one as Studio's background music) or upload a new one. It is placed at the playhead and leveled automatically to sit under the voice. On track A2 you move it, trim it by its edges, cut it with the blade, change its volume with the line and add fades; Repeat song loops it. With Duck music under the voice, the music goes down by itself whenever someone speaks and comes back after, following your cuts. You can change how far it goes down overall or drag each dip on A2; a double click (or double tap) returns it to the track level.

Titles (track T1)

Pick a template: Lower third (name and role), Centred title or Highlighted text. Type the text and, if you like, a second line. Change the font, size, colors, background (none, box or bar), outline and shadow, and how it enters and leaves. Place it with the nine positions or by dragging it in the viewer. Save your brand style to use it in your next titles. Titles move out of the way of burned-in captions on their own.

Transitions

Every cut can have a transition: Dissolve, Dip to black, White flash, Push or Zoom. Add it from the cut on the timeline or with Ctrl+D on the nearest cut, and set its length in the inspector. The start and end of the video can fade in and out.

B-roll (track V2)

B-roll is footage shown over the recording: a video (MP4, MOV or WebM up to 5 minutes) or a photo (PNG or JPG). Upload it or pick it from your Studio library, and it is placed at the playhead on track V2. Full screen covers the picture (Crop, or Whole, over a blur when its shape differs); Box shows it in a frame you can move, resize and round, dragging it in the viewer. It has entrance and exit animations, a gentle zoom for photos and, for a video with sound, you can hear it with its own volume and fades. To pick a full-screen B-roll from the viewer, use Alt + click.

Intro and outro

Add a video or an image (shown for 1 to 15 seconds) before and after your edit. They appear as INTRO and OUTRO on the timeline and become your brand defaults for your next videos. If you export vertical or square and your intro is horizontal, you choose how it fits: over a blurred background, cropped or with your own vertical version. You can also use them in AI Clips.

Format: horizontal, vertical or square

With the viewer format (Original, 9:16 or 1:1) you see how your edit looks in each shape. In vertical and square, Follow whoever speaks analyzes the video in your browser so the framing moves to the person speaking; the export uses that same framing.

Export

Press Export. Download to my device prepares an MP4 that stays available for 24 hours; Save to my cloud creates a new recording in your Google Drive and leaves the original untouched. The export runs on the server, so you can keep working while it finishes. It comes out in the format you see in the viewer, with frame-exact cuts, the voice, music, titles, transitions, B-roll, intro, outro and the captions you chose.

Saving, undo and history

Everything saves on its own while you work; at the top you see whether it is saved, saving or not saved (click to retry). Undo with Ctrl+Z and redo with Ctrl+Shift+Z. The History tab lists every change and you can go back to any of them with one click. Save as copy creates another edit of the same recording so you can try things without touching yours.

Browsers and touch screens

The editor works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on a computer. In Safari, the first time you play a recording made in another browser, the editor prepares the voice for a few seconds and tells you in the viewer. On touch screens: pinch the timeline to zoom, double tap a music dip to return it to the track level, and pick a full-screen B-roll by tapping it on track V2.

Keyboard shortcuts

AI Clips

AI finds the moments in your recording that work as short videos and gets them ready in vertical, with captions and following whoever speaks.
